EcoHealth Alliance

EcoHealth Alliance, formerly known as Wildlife Trust, is an international organization dedicated to local conservation and global health. Founded in 1971,EcoHealth Alliance is committed to unifying biodiversity conservation, ecology and health. We strive toprotectdelicate ecosystems for the mutual survival of wildlife and humans.

EcoHealth Alliance’s mission is to empower local conservation scientists worldwide to protect nature and safeguard ecosystem and human health. Our organization works to understand the links among human changes to the environment, the health of all species including humans, and the conservation of biodiversity. We conduct collaborative scientific research in these fields and use the outcomes to inform policy, develop curricula and formulate practical solutions to environmental threats that affect these links.

EcoHealth Alliance examines the pathways of emerging zoonotic diseases that can be transmitted from animals to humans, such as the West Nile Virus, SARS, H1N1, Avian Influenza, Lyme Disease and Nipah Virus. Our recent work has included discovery of the wildlife reservoir for SARS-like Coronaviruses in China, predicting the risk of West Nile virus infection in the northeastern United States, providing the first science-based predictions on the future route of entry of H5N1 avian influenza into the USA and the first ever-predictive map of global “Emerging Disease Hotspots.”

EcoHealth Alliance's work spans the U.S. and more than 20 countries in Central and South America, the Caribbean, Africa and Asia to research ways for people and wildlife to share bioscapes for their mutual survival. Our dedicated scientific teams currently head programsinternationally that support conservationists in over a dozen countries at the local levelproviding a forum for education, funding and training. These partnerships allow EcoHealth Alliance to gain insight into specific issues from disease outbreaks to the protection of wildlife.

We believe the key to success is long-term, grassroots involvement. EcoHealth Alliance, a conservation science innovator, specializes in saving biodiversity in human-dominated bioscapes where ecological health is most at risk because of habitat loss, species imbalance, pollution and other environmental issues caused by human-induced change.

Featured story

EcoHealth Alliance is a pioneer in the study of conservation medicine. This discipline studies the links between animal, human and ecosystem health. Conservation medicine bridges disciplines to examine the health of individuals, communities and populations and the ecosystems in which they live. Conservation Medicine provides new skills, tools and vision to the fields of both conservation biology and medicine. The program’s research has been instrumental in revealing the impact of emerging diseases in marine wildlife populations, as well as terrestrial fauna and avian species.

Mission

EcoHealth Alliance integrates innovative science-based solutions and partnerships that increase capacity to achieve two interrelated goals: protecting global health by preventing the outbreak of emerging disease and safeguarding ecosystems by promoting conservation.
