The Blake Island State Park Cascadia Marine Trail is on a sandy point on the northwestern tip of the island. The views of Seattle are spectacular and the hiking trails through the old forest are delightful. Perhaps best of all, this beautiful island is just a hop skip and a paddle away from the most densely populated shorelines in Puget Sound. Every year WWTA returns to Blake to help restore the Cascadia Marine Trail and surrounding areas by planting native dune grass, picking up trash that accumulates on the point, and returning native vegetation to eroded slopes.

Did you know that the Southern Puget Sound area used to be covered by prairie?  That's right! South Puget Sound's prairies and oak woodlands lie hidden among the region's forests, farms and homes.  One of the rarest ecosystems in the country, these open savannas were created by retreating glaciers 15,000 years ago, then were sustained by the fires of Native Americans for thousands of years. Today conservationists like you maintain our prairies through active management and restoration.

Connected to the new Issaquah Highlands development is a beautiful forest. Within this forest we're helping King County construct a trail that will eventually connect through to Duthie Hill Park from High Point. WTA is currently working on a neighborhood connector trail.

Beach Watchers is presenting Unintended Consequences: A History of Snohomish Shorelines, by Thomas Murphy, PhD, from Edmonds Community College.  The shorelines we see in today's Snohomish County are vastly different than they were 150 years ago. Dikes, railroads, dredging, filling, logging, agriculture, industrial and residential developments have helped urban communities grow and prosper, but they have also resulted in a variety of unintended consequences for water, land, wildlife and humans.
