Event Description:
Join EarthCorps and the Green Seattle Partnership and Seattle Parks and Recreation as we work together to keep Ravenna Park healthy!

You may have driven right over Ravenna Park and never realized that it was there! Hidden in a ravine that stretches under 15th Ave E, lies 50 acres of park complete with a gorgeous creek and tons of tall, tall trees. Ravenna Park has been in use as a park since the 1880s when visitors paid 25 cents to marvel at the giant Douglas Fir that called the park home.

These days, we are working to preserve this hidden oasis. Invasive plants like English Ivy are threatening to overtake the trees and other native plants in the park. Our projects will include invasive plant removal and preparation of planting sites. Come help us keep Ravenna Park beautiful!

Directions:
Ravenna Park's address is 5520 Ravenna Ave NE. We will be meeting at the picnic shelter near the 20th Ave. footbridge. When you get near the park, look for EarthCorps signs that will direct you to the Park's parking lot and then to the Volunteer Registration Table.

Specific tasks will include placing cardboard on former blackberry patches and applying mulch.

What to bring: Boots, work clothes, rain gear, and a water bottle. Snacks and drinks provided.

SE 53rd Open Space Volunteer Work Party

Date & Time:
Saturday, May 31, 2008
10:00am - 2:00pm

Event Description:
Join EarthCorps, Mercer Island Parks and Recreation and community members for urban forest restoration in this 25 acre open space. The forested area of this park is threatened by the spread of invasive plants such as English ivy. The City of Mercer Island's open space properties are losing trees and native vegetation from the rampant growth of invasive, non-native plants. This trend is expected to cause significant additional losses in the next twenty years. This will result in the decline of the benefits that open space properties currently provide to the public. Your help is needed to prevent these losses.

Work will focus on installing survival rings around native trees that are covered in English ivy, removing other invasive plants and continuing stewardship on previously restored areas. In the planting season we will be installing native trees, shrubs and ground cover. Even working for just a few hours contributes greatly, and because you are working in a local park, you can revisit your work for years to come.

If you are under 18 years of age: go to www.miparks.net and click on volunteer opportunities. The Volunteer Activity-Youth Form needs to be signed by a parent. Snacks, tools, and gloves will be provided!

Directions:
