I give my share for...
Mima Mounds and Glacial Heritage Preserves, Thurston County
July 18th, 2009
10:00am - 3:00pm
Need some fresh air? Come out and celebrate summer on our South Sound prairies! The South Puget Sound stunning mounded prairies were created thousands of year ago as the glaciers retreated. They were then sustained for thousands of years by the fires of the native american people who lived on the land. Today conservationists like you maintain our prairies through active management and restoration.
Wander beautiful Mima and Glacial prairies and collect native seeds from native wildflowers and grasses for our prairie restoration work. Marvel at the humble beauty of bobbing wildflowers as bluebirds and purplemartin's chatter overhead in July's blue skies. Glacial heritage and Mima Prairies are both unique because they both have the puzzling geological phenominon of mounded prairies. Get a chance to see a mound up close! On Saturday July 18th we will meet at the 1,100 acre prairie preserve, Glacial Heritage and then split up into two groups. One group will collect seed at the Mima Mounds Area Preserve and the other will collect seed at Glacial Heritage Preserve. Please bring a lunch, water bottle and weather appropriate work clothes. Work will begin at 10:00am and continue until 3:00pm, you may stay for however long you choose.
Directions:
Take I-5 to exit 95 (the Littlerock exit) about 10 miles south of Olympia. Go west through Littlerock (past the gas station and tavern) to the T intersection at the Mima Road/Waddell Creek. Go south (left) on Mima Road 2.7 miles. You will pass a tractor crossing sign, and the next left is the turn to Glacial. It's an unmarked gravel road; please be sure to adhere to the 15 mph speed limit on this road as there are often dogs and small children active nearby. Follow the road to its end and park near the gate.
