Earth Day Reception a Rousing Success

April 22, 2005

Earth Share of Washington held its annual Earth Day reception Thursday, April 21. The non-profit organization, which represents 66 conservation and environmental organizations, honored outstanding companies and individuals that support Earth Share of Washington. The event was sponsored by Puget Sound Energy (PSE), and Phil Bussey, representing PSE, gave a brief introductory talk.

Earth Share of Washington is best known for helping companies build effective employee giving programs. Recreational Equipment Incorporated (REI) received an award for management involvement, a key factor in the company's 100% increase in pledges to Earth Share and its member organizations in just one year. Kathleen Down-Gailey accepted the award for REI. Dave Goldberg from architectural design firm Mithun accepted the New Campaign Award in recognition of record pledges raised in the first year of an Earth Share giving campaign at similarly sized companies. Corixa's Elisabeth Gunningham was recognized for her "enthusiasm and tireless energy" working to promote employee giving at Corixa, which hosted the event. She pointed out the various conservation features of the building, including flooring made from salvaged wood, plus other energy and water devices.

Also acknowledged for their individual contributions were Rick Butzberger, Jacob Engelstein, Matthew Hyde, Sally Jewell, and Brian Unmacht.

Earth Share of Washington's reception coincided with the 35th anniversary of Earth Day (April 22, 1970).
