Earth Share's Day in the Park tops 750 volunteers!

June 17, 2005

Thanks to more than 750 volunteers turned out on this rainy June day from more than 50 environmental organizations, community groups, businesses, and goverment agencies.

Seattle Parks Senior Gardner, Bob Baines, summed up the value of an event like Day in the Park best when he said “Earth Share’s Day in the Park 2005 at Golden Gardens was the most productive volunteer work project I’ve ever attended!”

Thank you Luc Schoonjans & Anne Jennings for your excellent photographs!

Here are a few highlight from Earth Share’s Day in Park 2005:
* Volunteers patrolled nearly a half mile of beach and removed about 800 lbs. of trash in the form of nails and other bonfire remnant material, and spread 10 tons of new sand,
* eradicated the dunes from invasives, and maintained native vegetation there,
* removed more than 2000 lbs. of ivy from the upper forest, clearing huge swaths of land previously covered in ivy, and mulching the bare soil in preparation for fall planting,
* removed invasive garlic mustard from around the park,
* and protected the delicate wetland ecosystem from invasive plants.

Urban trails need love too: Volunteers for Outdoor Washington has teamed up with the City of Seattle to restore the trails of Golden Gardens Park! Throughout the summer, volunteers will be clearing invasive species, planting native vegetation, re-building the trail tread, graveling - whew! Have fun, learn a skill and dig into some rewarding work. No experience required; VOW supplies all tools and training. Work parties most Saturdays from 8:30am to 2:30pm. For details, and to view all VOW work party dates, please visit their online calendar. Questions? Contact VOW at 206 517-3019 or info@trailvolunteers.org.

If you participated in this year’s event, please consider taking our survey to help make Day in the Park a better event year after year. It’s only 10 multiple choice questions (okay, one open-ended question), 5 minutes of your time, we promise! We value your feedback and suggestions.

HOPE TO SEE YOU IN 2006!

Thank you,
Dave, Lisa & the Earth Share of Washington Staff
