Tips for Sharing the Trail this Spring
Posted Apr 19 2010 - 10:05am
Blog post from the Bicycle Alliance fo Washington -It's spring and people are flocking to the trails. Urban and community trails are enjoyed by a variety of users-bicyclists, walkers, joggers, skaters, wheelchair users and sometimes equestrians. Whether you use a trail as a carfree place to exercise, enjoy the outdoors, or bike to work, practicing trail etiquette will make our trails safe and enjoyable for all.
The Bicycle Alliance of Washington offers the following tips for using busy shared-use trails:
All Users
- Stay to the right except to pass. Pass others on the left, and use voice or bell before you pass to make others aware of your presence and intent.
- Listen up. Avoid wearing headphones. You need your ears to hear other trail users approaching.
- Don't litter. Pack it in, pack it out applies to all trails.
- Be seen. Use lights and reflective clothing when it's dark.
- Obey all trail and traffic signs.
- Respect private property adjacent to the trail.
Bicyclists
- Ride at safe speeds. Slow down when approaching slower trail users.
- Be alert to equestrians. Don't startle horses. Stop, stand and speak to distinguish yourself from a predator that would frighten a horse.
Dog Owners
- Keep pets leashed and under control.
- Mind the leash. Thin, retractable leashes are difficult to see.
- Scoop all poop.
