I give my share for...
Glacial Heritage Prairie, Thurston County
Please come out and help preserve one of the most endangered eco-systems in the country! The South Puget Sound stunning mounded prairies were created thousands of years ago as the glaciers retreated and were then sustained by the fires of Native American tribes who lived on the land. Today, conservationists like you maintain our prairies through active management and restoration.
On Saturday, June 12th, we will be focusing on invasive species control as well as continuing our on-going native seed cleaning project. Also on our agenda, June is a big month for native plant identification and locating as well as collection, and we need many helping hands to assist with this project. Want to take a walk in the sunshine and still feel productive? Now you know how! Come out and marvel at the humble beauty of the prairies and work to restore this fragile ecosystem that is called home to an abundance of life. Family participation is welcomed and encouraged! Please bring a lunch, water bottle, weather appropriate work clothes and a good pair of work gloves. Work will begin at 10:00am and continue until 3:00pm, but you may stay for however long you choose. We will also be having our usual end of day potluck, so please feel free to bring a favorite dish to share if you'd like, although this is definitely optional. Hope to see you there!
Directions:
Take I-5 to exit 95 (the Littlerock exit) about 10 miles south of Olympia. Go west through Littlerock (past the gas station and tavern) to the T intersection at the Mima Road/Waddell Creek. Go south (left) on Mima Road 2.7 miles. You will pass a tractor crossing sign, and the next left is the turn to Glacial. It's an unmarked gravel road; please be sure to adhere to the 15 mph speed limit on this road as there are often dogs and small children active nearby. Follow the road to its end and park near the gate.
Please contact Lauren Poulos, Prairie Restoration Volunteer Coordinator, at lpoulos@tnc.org for more information and to RSVP.
