Washington Trails Association works with lawmakers to advance the interests of hikers but they can’t do it alone. Decisionmakers also need to hear directly from hikers. Your elected officials need to know that their constituents want safer trails and care about preservation of wild lands, access to trails and adequate funding for maintenance. In 2008, WTA brought 50 hikers from across the state together in Olympia to speak out for trails. After the event, legislators and constituents alike commented on how fun and influential the Hiker Lobby Day was. In 2009, we are looking to build upon last year both in terms of numbers and results. This session, Hiker Lobby Day will be focused on helping DNR keep their funding and keeping Washington’s backcountry safer for all trail users. The day is a fun and easy way to get involved. In a morning workshop, participants will learn how to lobby elected officials and get an overview about the issues of the day. Then it is off to the Capitol to meet with your legislators and put these new skills to use. It's a great way to speak on behalf of hikers in Washington.
