Mission Creek Estuary Restoration
Priest Point Park in Olympia contains some of the best shoreline habitat in any urban area on the Sound.
It has one largely functional pocket estuary (Ellis Creek/Cove) and another that will be restored in the future (Mission Creek/Cove). Come out and join us for Earth Month restoration activities at the mouth of Mission Creek.
We will be preparing the area for the removal of an old road and the restoration of salt marsh along the fringe of the Cove that is now a marsh filled in with sediment. This event is co-sponsored by People For Puget Sound, City of Olympia, and South Puget Sound Salmon Enhancement Group.
We hope to get a big crowd and have a great time playing Tarzan and ripping out invasive English ivy. We'll have snacks and drinks and hopefully our spring weather will have sprung and we'll get a wonderful day in the spring blooming native shrubs of the park.
It is a great day to make an excursion to Olympia from elsewhere because in the late afternoon after the workday we have our signature wacky event -- the Procession of the Species. That's an annual grand parade of exquisite and makeshift creatures through the streets of downtown Olympia. This date is also Olympia's Arts Walk where there is a wonderful diversity of local artists displaying their art in downtown businesses so it is a great day to explore Olympia and help the Sound!
DRIVING: From Interstate 5 take the Port of Olympia exit and stay on Plum/East Bay Drive until you reach the cool forested green of Priest Point Park, 2600 East Bay Dr. NE, Olympia, WA . Follow the signs to the event after exiting
into the Park. We will be on the west side of the road and meeting up at a picnic shelter.
