SLNWR is located on the Columbia River, 10 miles east of Vancouver, Washington. The 1,049-acre Steigerwald Lake National Wildlife Refuge consists of historic riverine flood plain habitat, semi-permanent wetlands, cottonwood-dominated riparian corridors, pastures, and remnant stands of Oregon white oak.

The Washington Department of Transportation has estimated that this facility may be used by as many as 100,000 visitors annually, providing the Service with one of the best outreach opportunities in the Pacific Northwest. The refuge also serves as the operational headquarter for Pierce and Franz Lake Refuges.

Volunteer opportunities consist of identifying and flagging native plantings, hand/mechanical trimming of area around plantings and watering. There will also be some Yellow Flag Iris removal in August. Volunteers need only wear sturdy shoes; jeans are recommended. Water and other tools will be provided. Work days are open for scheduling on a group or individual basis, but there are two scheduled Saturday work parties: August 8th and the 22nd, 9-12:30. Meeting place is Gibbons Creek Wildlife Trailhead on SR 14, just east of Washougal. Directions and further information can be found at http://www.fws.gov/ridgefieldrefuges/steigerwaldlake/.
