Washington Water Trust improves and protects stream flows and water quality throughout Washington that benefit agriculture, fisheries, wildlife, recreational activities and healthy communities. We do this by using innovative, market-based transactions and cooperative partnerships to create balanced solutions. In Washington, many streams run completely dry during late summer due to irrigation for agriculture. Washington Water Trust works with landowner to design more efficient methods or irrigation, changing time or place of their irrigation to keep water instream during critical migration, spawning or rearing seasons. We lease or purchase water rights from the landowner during these periods to compensate them for water kept instream. In many cases, stream flow during these critical periods means the difference between fish passage and successful reproduction or untimely death. One example of our work in the Okanogan is the reconnection of Salmon Creek to the Okanogan River which will increase steelhead populations in that basin by up to 50 percent.
